Modeled after an older icon of the Maternal Lineage of Christ treasured at the Monastery of Our Lady 'Saidraya' in Jerusalem, this icon shows 4 generations: Christ as a child, the Most Holy Theotokos, St. Anna (the mother of the Theotokos), as well as St. Mariam (the mother of Anna and Great-grandmother of Christ).

The first listing under July 25th in the 'Great Synaxaristis' by Venerable Nikodemos the Hagiorite states that holy and righteous Anna (the mother of the Theotokos) is the daughter of Matthan the priest and his wife Mariam (page 102 of the -1982 edition).

    This icon is very beautiful, and depicts the Mother, Grandmother, and Great -Grandmother of Christ. it serves to remind us of the importance of family, and of knowing who our forefathers and foremothers are. At the same time, for me, it personalizes Christ's earthly relationship to His family. I believe any Orthodox family would want this as a part of their family iconostas!
